If it wasn’t for industry standards, every engineer would be struggling significantly more to develop and implement new technology. Many of us who have worked in computing have had to reference one standard or another, and as the industry moves quicker every year, the need to develop new standards in computer science and engineering more become even more important. But how do these standards get created? Who comes up with these? What are the hot topics in, for example, AI and Wi-Fi for standards?

Join us for a special presentation with a few IEEE Computer Society’s Standards Activities Board experienced standards experts to get all questions answered! Furthermore, the IEEE CS 2025 President will introduce its strategic areas and the SWEBOK Guide, which has been adopted as an ISO/IEC standard.

6:05pm-6:20pm: IEEE Computer Society’s Strategic Activities and Products including SWEBOK Guide

Hironori Washizaki (IEEE Computer Society President, Waseda University)

This talk first provides an overview of IEEE CS’s strategic areas, including engaging our members, engaging the industry, and leading new areas such as AI and Society. Then, the talk explains the latest version of the Guide to the Software Engineering Body of Knowledge (SWEBOK Guide V4.0), which mainly reflects new developments in SE practice (such as Agile and DevOps) and the growth of BOK, resulting in new knowledge areas (including software architecture, security, and operations) as well as connections to related areas such as AI. The SWEBOK Guide V3.0 has been adopted as a standard ISO/IEC TR 19759:2015. Note that the IEEE SWEBOK Summit will be held on April 29th.

 Hironori Washizaki is the 2025 IEEE Computer Society president. He is a professor and the associate dean of the Research Promotion Division at Waseda University. He is a visiting professor at the National Institute of Informatics and an advisor at the University of Human Environments. He also works in the industry as an outside director and advisor at eXmotion and SI&C. He has led professional and educational activities at the IEEE CS, including the evolution of the Guide to the Software Engineering Body of Knowledge (SWEBOK) and the CS Juniors program.

6:20pm-6:35pm: Introduction of IEEE Computer Society Standards Activities

Edward Au (IEEE Computer Society Vice President for Standards Activities)

Edward Au, Ph.D. is the 2024 and 2025 Vice President for Standards Activities of the IEEE Computer Society. He was a recipient of the IEEE SA Standards Medallion “For exceptional leadership and skill in driving the development of IEEE 802.11™ Wireless LAN standards” in 2021. Edward is the Chair of IEEE Technical Activities Board Committee on Standards that oversees the advancement and evangelization of technical standards activities across all IEEE Societies and Councils, as well as an acting Chair of Computer Society Standards Activities Board standards committee that manage working groups and standards development projects that are under the purview of the Society and for new lines of work or for standards for which a viable standards committee has not been identified.

6:35pm-6:50pm: Introduction of how to get involved in IEEE Standards Association and its standards development process (TBD)

Lei Wang (IEEE Standards Association Standards Board Chair)

Dr. Lei Wang is a long-term active participant and contributor to IEEE standards development, particularly, in IEEE 802 LAN/MAN Standards, e.g., 802.11 Wireless LAN and 802.16 WirelessMAN. She is currently working for Futurewei Technologies Inc., a Huawei R&D subsidiary in the USA, as a Technical VP, Standards. Prior to joining Futurewei, Lei worked for multiple companies in the wireless and wired communication industry in the USA and Canada, including: as a principal engineer in Marvell Semiconductors, as a director of system engineering in NextWave technologies, as a senior manager of software engineering in Wi-Lan technologies, etc. Lei also volunteers in IEEE Standards Association (IEEE SA) governance bodies, including serving as the chair of the IEEE Standards Association Standards Board (IEEE SASB) for year 2025, the chair of IEEE SASB New Standards Committee (NesCom) for year 2024 and 2023, the IEEE SA representative to IEEE WIE in recent 3 years, etc.

6:50pm-7:30pm: Introduction of IEEE 802.11 (Wi-Fi) and how involvement in standards development shapes career (TBD)

Dorothy Stanley (IEEE 802.11 Working Group Chair, IEEE Standards Association Board of Governors)

Dorothy is an HPE Fellow in the Office of the CTO at Aruba, a Hewlett Packard Enterprise company. She has been involved in wireless LAN product strategy and standards activities at Aruba since 2005, leading and participating in IEEE 802.11 Working Group, Wi-Fi Alliance, Wireless Broadband Alliance and Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF), standards and industry certification projects. Dorothy has worked on multiple networking technologies and protocols in both wired and wireless networking. Prior to joining Aruba Networks, Stanley was a Consulting Member of the Technical Staff at Agere Systems for Wavelan products and a Distinguished Member of the Technical Staff at Lucent Technologies and AT&T Bell Laboratories. Dorothy is a member of the IEEE Standards Association Board of Governors, and has been a member of the IEEE SA Standards Board, chairing the IEEE-SA New Standards Committee for many years.
